silencing my ringer for sms notifications

im use to my old phone ringing and i can press a button on the side to silence it quick, but i cant seem to silence my ringtone for sms notifications unless i open the notification window, any program that can fix this?

    first u should have to mention your cell phone model than it would be easy to answer u ..... and as for a lil help go to your phone settings and into your profile and then configure your profil there u have all the details about u having right now as your current profil .......... thanX
