Sculpture means to carve out of hard materials. It is the art of creating three dimensional forms. In sculpturing artist engraves and carves stones, wood, clay and in many cases marbles and lime stones. A sculptor usually carves out human forms, different abstract shapes, out of hard materials. Common materials used to make these sculptures are Plaster, clay, wood, plastic, bronze etc. Tools that are commonly used are a chisel and a wooden hammer. Now days there are many new techniques for sculpturing. The techniques to make sculpture are Carving, Modeling, casting, construction and Assemblage. Carving is a process in which the artists’ cut out of solid materials and form a desired form. In modeling artist uses soft materials to make the desired model. Mostly used material for modeling is clay, wax, plaster etc. Modeling is easy than carving because it is easy to shape a soft material than a hard one. The technique of the twentieth century is Construction and assemblage. In this sculpturing method artist combine and joins various materials to form a three dimensional object. There are some common forms of sculpture include free standing sculpture, Sound sculpture, light sculpture, jewelry sculpture, kinetic sculpture (that involves aspect of physical motion), Architecture sculpture, Environmental sculpture, Statue sculpture etc.
