The short answer is yes, the Buckwheat character was originally played by a girl. Here is a more detailed answer if you are interested. And I think you will be satisfied. The famous American series Our Gang, also known as The Little Rascals or Hal Roach's Rascals, was a short comedy film which was based on a group of very poor neighborhood children and the adventures which they had done together. It was created by a comedy producer Hal Roach, the famous Our Gang was initially produced at the Roach studio and started in 1922 as a silent short subject series.

Later Roach changed the distributors from Pathé to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the year 1927. The Buckwheat character started off as Stymies little sister, and was initially (for one film) played by Stymies real-life little sister, Carlena (who had previously appeared a number of times under other names). Then there were three more films in which a little girl named Willie Mae Taylor played the part. After that, a little boy named Billie Thomas (who had already appeared a few times as a nameless boy) took over the Buckwheat character, which continued to be a female character for another year or so before turning into a boy. Billie Thomas continued to play the role all the way to the end of the series.

I hope you are satisfied now. I am happy to be of your help.

    Cheers
