Katydids is known as bush crickets in British English and it contains more than 6400 species. It belongs to the family of Tettigonioidea. They resemble grasshoppers but they are also known as long horned grasshoppers.
They can be distinguished from grasshoppers by their length and because of their antennae. Their antennae exceeds their own body length.
The males have some organs in their body which produce unique sound. Their eggs are typically oval shaped and they lay it on the host plant. Different species of Katydids live in tropical regions in the world. They feed on different types of food which include leaves, seeds but they are also vulnerable to attacks from other predators like snakes and lizards.
They are usually in green, occasionally pink and are about the size of 1 ¼ to 5 inches. They are also known for their unique voice which resembles singing in the evening. The males have song producing organs which are located in their front wings. The male and female communicate with each other with their unique voice. Male send voice signals which females respond to. Newly born adults resemble to the adult except of their sizes.
katydids length is 2-2-1/2. Their life span is about one year. Some katydids are carnivorous while some are herbivorous. Eggs remained sticked to the underside of the leaves and it takes 2-3 months for eggs to hatch.
