Hi, Yes, this is a common problem. Only Sony (and some of the new Toshiba and others who are just adopting) has built in diagnostics. The problem is this; When a set goes into protecton - for what ever reason - the same symptom is observed: It powers off and will not come on again. Think of the protection circuit as an electronic fuse. If a fuse went out you would replace the fuse and hope that would fix it. But in reality something caused the fuse to go out. A fuse is a current device and when the current exceeds some predetermined amount the fuse blows. The protection circuit does somewhat the same thing, but is operates much faster and is resettable. The bad news is when protection is activated we have no idea what caused it; only that some section of the tv has drawn too much current and tripped the protection system. The most common causes are short circuits in the high voltage, either of the deflection amplifiers, the main power supply or the audio amplifier. So if you were to call in a service tech, those are the places where the investigation would begin. I think you will need a service tech with this one. Since the set is only 3 years old it is worthy of some investment, inspite of the fact it is an RCA brand. However, it is pretty hard to get service of any kind for a set this size under $200. So expect to get a bill larger than that. Best wishes,
