I thought this movie was based on actual events, however even though in the beginning of the movie it thanks the families and the police department at the end of the movie, after it says his body was found by the police on this date and her whereabouts are still unknown, read the paragraphs that come up. It clearly says at the end of the first paragraph "the characters and events depicted in this playmovie are fictionous and any similarities to any persons living or dead is purely coincedental". In my experience I would have to say that since this is written in that paragraph this movie is not based on actual events and is just portrayed to make people believe that; although it would have made the movie much cooler if it were!!

I thought that the movie was based on a true story, it was scary and believable, an ordinary couple but a girl that had been terrorised since she was a little girl. Who knows if demons and ghosts are real, in my opinion they are. I know a family that have had strange things happen and have seen things happen, orbs floating in the air, a perfect pile of stones on the wooden floor, even mysterious scratches on the woman when she wakes up. Some ghost experts and people that dint believe came to their flat and studied it for hours on end until they got a response. It was quite a scary experience for me as i had never heard of this before and never quite believed if it was true. I would hate if something like this happened to me, and would never try and make whatever it is (ghost or demon) show itself.

Paranormal activity is prob a collection of a few ghost lore events and acual events but on demons possesing you there have been documented exorcisims where the deamons have killed the host (The exorcisim of emily rose) where you can find that the only fictonal part of the story was how many priests did the exorcisum and the trial but there are aculy post mordum pics and pics after death also the acual names of the real deamons that were in her. I checked with alot of people that keep old newspapers and they have an article talking about what happened then I went to the movies and watched it and what I read all happened in the movie except for the ending when she killed her botfriend that was just really weird.
From my findings, it is based on true events, and it's not all true. I saw it just the other night and have been looking things up. The director has had experiences with the paranormal and made the movie on a budget of $15,000. Things like this can happen, but it didn't really happen. At least not to the directors knowledge. Some people answering this question saying you are all idiots and such, they are rude and obviously don't care about other people. Just because you don't believe doesn't mean other people do. I have had experiences as well, living in old haunted places, and owning haunted objects. Things do happen, not to everyone, but to some people that believe. Again, the movie isn't all true, but it is based on experiences. If you haven't seen it, go see it! It's really good. :D

All I know is I am definetly going to be taking a closer look at my belief system and get to know God on a more familiar bases because personally I think he would be the only one that could truely intervene.
omfg its not truefreddy kruger movies do not say that they are true does that make jason,micheal meyers, freddy kruger real ? no it doesn't it was played in college universities for the pyschology feilds but college kids liked it so much that they released it nation wide. its defenantly not real but they did a damn good job on making it look real. i didn't sleep for a week
its true. the movie didnt say anything about being fictional, and the reason why the movie took place in 2006 is because the family of the guy who got killed were upset and didnt want this to be seen.,
You people are morons. Its not based on a true story at all. The movie is fiction but Im sure everyone was too dumb to bother to read that line at the end of the movie that said, "this is a fictional event..."

i too am a christian, that loves to be scared on occasion. this movie did just that scared the crap out of me. honestly i dont know if this movie is real or not but the things i have experienced in my life with spirits coming and sitting on the edge of my bed at nite and feel the bed move, is a very weird experience. demons are very real and they can do whatever they feel like to you when ever they want too. but if this movie is about a couple that is dealing witha demon spirit then why do they need a director i thought it was all free will?? i thought the police just happen to run across the tapes by accident?? go figure it was still a great movie

well at the end of the movie they said that they never found the girl ??? But they found the boyfriends body, so that alone gives me the idea that it is based on a true story.

I believe that it is based on true events that have occured in the past. Its weird because at the end of the movie it didnt even have a directors name the actors name or anything. It just finished with a weird ending that didnt make any sense so it seems like its true, idk it could be just a written made up story or it actually happend. who knows!!

According to writer/director Oren Peli, he got the idea for the movie after he and his girlfriend bought their first house together. They bought a new suburban tract house, which was still settling. At night, the house could be heard creaking and settling, causing little noises and things to fall off shelves and break. Peli doesn't say whether or not he thought his house was haunted, but that incident is what gave him the idea to write Paranormal Activity.
