i have been served with a divorce application, what do I need to do?

It all depends on where you live: If you live in Canada or the United States, you have up to 30 days (60 days if the application is served [legally delivered] outside of North America) to respond to the application. If you do not agree with the claims set out in the application, or wish to make a claim of your own, you must prepare a response, serve it on the other party and file it with the court. The document that is filed in response is called an answer.

Normally that notice means money for a lawyer: If you are using a lawyer, you should make an appointment right away to discuss your response. If you do not file an answer within the required time, your spouse can ask the court for an order based on the claims in the application.
