  1. John

Marilyn Monroe was born in Los Angeles, CA and lived there for most of her life. As she was a Hollywood actress, she did the majority of her work there as well, the bulk of which was in the mid-1950s.

Monroe was primarily known for her blonde bombshell beauty, hitting major box-office successes in such movies as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, How to Marry a Millionaire, and The Seven Year Itch. She was, however, also a skilled dramatic actress, as demonstrated in pictures such as Do not Bother to Knock, Bus Stop, and The Misfits, and also a very talented comedienne, as shown in many of her films of the early 1950s, and the film the American Film Institute has deemed the funniest movie ever made, Some like It Hot.

It was luck that brought Marilyn Monroe to fame her mother was a film cutter at RKO Studios and gave birth to Monroe out of wedlock, in Los Angeles, CA, as mentioned earlier. After a series of foster homes (her mother was mentally unstable and unable to care for the girl), Monroe married the next-door neighbor at 16 and during the war, while working at Lockheed, was discovered by a Life photographer passing through. It was very much the time and place that catapulted Marilyn to stardom--had she been born in Lincoln, Nebraska under the same circumstances, it is unlikely she would have come to be what she has.

Monroe was very much under the influence of the Hollywood system for much of her life. Discounting the time she spent at the Actors Studio in New York, which made her realize her potential as an actress, she almost always worked in Los Angeles under 20th Century Fox, which saw the potential for her beauty to bring in profit exploited it for its own financial gain. She was forced into roles which limited her abilities and typecast her. This has led to the public misconception of her even today. Monroes popularity is still based on her looks, and not many people care to look beyond it to see her immense acting talent.
