Years ago I saw a film that was about an Englishman on vacation in Europe in the early years of World War Two. He ended up taking a group of children out of Europe and back to England. In the movie he had a beard and was very curt with the Germans. Do you know the title of this movie? Can someone tell me the name of this World War 2 movie? I am really looking forward for some help here. Thanks in advance for this great favor.

    Hello there,

That film was called "The Pied Paper" (1942). It starred Monty Woolley as Englishman Mr Howard, who is on a fishing holiday in eastern France when the Germans invade in 1940. Setting off to try and get back home he is persuaded to take along the two Cavanaugh children (played by Roddy McDowall and Anne Baxter), and as his journey progresses his family keeps growing in size.
The picture was adapted by Nunnally Johnson from the novel of the same name by Nevil Shute. It was focused by Irving Pichel. It was selected for Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Monty Woolley), Best Cinematography, Black-and-White and Best Picture.
The movie’s cast includes: Monty Woolley as Howard, Roddy McDowall as Ronnie Cavanaugh, Anne Baxter as Nicole Rougeron, Otto Preminger as Major Diessen, J. Carrol Naish as Aristide Rougeron, Lester Matthews as Mr. Cavanaugh, Jill Esmond as Mrs. Cavanaugh, Ferike Boros as Madame, Peggy Ann Garner as Sheila Cavanaugh, Merrill Rodin as Willem, Maurice Tauzin as Pierre, Fleurette Zama as Rose.
