st george and the illiwarra clubs combined years ago, st. george being the predominant was chosen as the main drawcard, it sounds better
St George were known as the Saints and the Dragons. In 1999, the Illawarra Steelers were taken over by St George, their new name being St George/Illawarra. If they were called the Saints it was taken as a slur against their merged team whereas the Dragons nickname did not upset anyone's sensitivities (they think).
