The Toyota Hilux Surf is an offroad vehicle which is manufactured by Toyota and its main powerplant is in Japan, it is exported to large number of countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia. The original Surf was more than a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with fiberglass shell over the bed, but the model has undergone different independent development into the mid-size, off-road vehicle.
The Hilux Surf is mostly sold outside Japan, primarily in United States and Australia, just like the Toyota 4Runner. The second generation models were sold in the United Kingdom as the Toyota 4Runner. The lines were then penned by the principal Toyota designer Ian Harold Brown. The first run of Hilux Surf models were built at the main Toyota's plant in Tahara, Japan, but starting with the start of third generation models production which was a split between both the Tahara plant and Hino Motors' Hamura, Japan plant.
Thus, the first generation Surf is mechanically identical to the Toyota Hilux pickup. All first generation Surfs had two-doors which were indistinguishable from the pickups from dashboard forward. Nearly all of the changes were to the latter half of the body; because the rear springs were actually downgraded with a leaf less than the pickup, with the additional weight of all the rear seats and fiberglass top, these models normally tend to suffer from sagging rear suspensions.
