West Nile virus was first identified in Uganda in 1937. In United States it was first discovered in New York in 1999. After that, the virus has spread in all states of the United States.
West Nile virus (WNV) is a type of virus belongs to the family Flaviviridae which is Part of the Japanese encephalitis (JE) antigenic complex of viruses. It is commonly found in both temperate and tropical regions. It usually infects birds, but is known to infect humans, chipmunks, squirrels, skunks, horses, dogs, cats, bats, domestic rabbits, crocodiles and alligators as well. The major cause of human infection is through the bite of an infected mosquito. According to collected data, almost 90% of West Nile Virus reported infections in humans are without any symptoms.
Cryoelectron microscopy and image reconstructions of the virus show a 45–50 nm virion covered with a smooth protein surface. The structure of the virus is similar to the dengue fever virus; both belong to the genus Flavivirus within the family Flaviviridae. The genetic material of WNV is a positive-sense, a single strand of RNA. It is between 11,000 and 12,000 nucleotides long. These genes encode three structural proteins and seven non-structural proteins. The RNA strand is located within a nucleocapsid made from 12 kDa protein blocks; the capsid is contained within a host-derived membrane altered by two viral glycoproteins.
