The face value of a bond, also called the par value or principal, is the quantum of money a bond holder gets back from the issuer upon the bond’s maturity. A bond’s price change during its life; therefore the face value and actual price of the bond frequently vary. When a bond’s price is lower than its face value, the bond is thought to be trading at a discount. When a bond’s price is higher than its face value, the bond is believed to be trading at a premium. When a bond’s price is equivalent to its face value, the bond is supposed to be trading at par value.
