The opposite of abbot is abbess. It is the female superior or mother superior, of an abbey of nuns.
In the Eastern Orthodox, Catholic Church, Anglican and Coptic abbeys, the mode of election, place, privileges, and authority of an abbess are same usually with those of an abbot. The office is discretionary, selected by the choice being by the secret votes of the nuns belonging to the community. Like an abbot, an abbess is solemnly permitted to enter her office by formal blessing and prayer, conferred by the bishop in whose territory the monastery is located, or by an abbot or another bishop with appropriate permission. The abbess gets only the ring and a copy of the rule of the order unlike the abbot. She does not receive a miter nor is given a crosier as part of the ceremony; however, by ancient tradition, she may carry a crosier when leading her community. The abbess furthermore traditionally adds a pectoral cross to her custom as an emblem of office.

Abbesses are, like abbots, foremost superiors according to canon law. They get the vows of the nuns of the abbey and have full power or authority in its administration. As they do not get Holy Orders in the Catholic, Oriental and Orthodox Churches they do not hold certain powers bestows upon abbots. Even they do not exercise authority over territories outside of their monastery as well.
