More than 420 feature-length film versions of William Shakespeare's plays have been dramatized. It makes Shakespeare the most filmed writer ever in any language of the world. Some are faithful to the original story and text, whereas many others are adaptations that exert merely the plots instead his dialogue.
The silent film industry began to get shape in Europe and America in the 1900s when Shakespearean plays were a small part of its repertoire. In France and Italy at that time cinema was not renowned as an art form in itself, but it was considered as a medium to present the art of traditional theatre. This notion was dubbed "Film d'Art". Shakespearean plays' "public domain" status have prepared them beautiful to film producers, whoever hoped freedom from a "faithful" representation of a theatre play.
At start, many cheap and widespread "nickelodeons" drove the film industry in the United States. American film makers then started to learn to attract viewers of higher class. They might also have been affected via the "Film d'Art" spirit. They set out to motion the themes of their films from stories of old-fashioned workers, to classical works. Film makers were also giving response to calls from priestly communities, and the governments, for a reduction of the quantity of brutality exhibited in historical films. Film makers chose Shakespearean dramas because they were widely honored by the higher and lower classes of American society as well.
