Boston and New York have shared an intense rivalry as cities even before the American Revolution. If we look at the history, the city of Boston was well-known for being the educational, cultural, artistic, and economic power in the United States. Its concentration of elite schools and manufacturing hubs helped maintain this image for a number of years. On the other hand, New York was often looked down upon as the unknown, over-populated as compare to the upper-class and clean Boston. Nevertheless, New York's economic power soon overcame Boston's in the 19th century due to its speedy population growth and boundary of the Erie Canal, along with massive growth in the manufacturing, shipping, insurance and financial services businesses. By the time it was start of 20th century, this dynamic had completely shifted as New York had become the focus of American capitalism, and the change was reflected in the new national pastime.
