    That is somewhat difficult to answer because I'm not completely sure what you mean by "traditional."

    Certainly there are a variety of regional costumes that are claimed to be traditional dress but, in truth, the accuracy of these claims depends on what time period you are talking about and the circumstances of the people under discussion.

    For the great majority of France's history and for the greatest number of people, the "traditional" garb would be the daily working clothes of a farm worker. This was very simple indeed.

    It usually consisted of a simple smock that hung to the knees usually with crude pants but sometimes without, wooden shoes, and a floppy broad brimmed hat woven of straw or made of felt.
