Meaning of what is burning in?

Hi,

In the movie To Sir with Love, When Thackeray enters the room, the students are milling around and he completely scolds them, sending the boys out, and calling the girls s***s what is burning in the stove that they have to clear out the stench? Thackeray refers to it as that disgusting thing. I am using the film with a class in Japan, and they are all asking what it is.

Well, I watched the movie To Sir with Love, especially that scene again after I got your question, and you are correct he does specify that the males leave. I had never paid attention to that detail before which makes me even unsure than I was when I put the DVD in Going to have to do some extra work on this one... you have got me puzzled now. So keep it simple and make things easy for you as well. It is good to criticize something, but think wisely and make sure you are observing the right things.

Believe it I have always been under the notion that it is a joint that someone was smoking and threw in the stove. So it is possible that you do not know why, but that was my immediate reaction when I saw it. You can check the film again, and see if you notice anything else to the contrary. I guess you will find the same thing.
