What is Statutory Sick Pay in the UK?

A. Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) in the UK is paid to employees who are unable to work because they are sick. Statutory Sick Pay is paid at the same time and in the same way as you would pay wages for the same period.

As an employer is responsible for paying SSP to employees who meet certain qualifying conditions. Employers also need to record any SSP they pay on the employee's form P11 Deductions Working Sheet - or equivalent payroll record.
