shoplifter $30 dollars worth of merchandise, got caught, and paid for it. The security person took down my social security number, address, and took a photocopy of my DL. I asked him what I can expect and he said that I will not have to go to court and will receive a letter.

What is this letter likely to say? Will I really not have to go to court? Will this incident go on my permanent record (I am 20)? Is it best to pay if there are any charges? If I pay the charges, are they likely to come after me or will it all be over?
