I too am a former juvenile offender. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think about what I did. I work hard for a living now and I pay taxes. I try to be helpful and considerate of people ALWAYS. I am not proud of what I once did but I have not been arrested since 1988. I have been able to do a lot of good that I would never have been able to do if I was still in jail. If any of these people had gone on to commit other crimes since the Sylvia Likens murder, I would say "Throw away the key as they are beyond redemption." But, they did not commit other crimes. What they did was not right but keeping them in jail is not going to bring Syliva back. AND, it costs more to keep them in jail than otherwise. As things are, they are paying taxes instead of being a burden. Things worked as they should.
These people had their day in court. You missed it. Stop trying to put them on trial again.

Regarding Stephanie Baniszewski, she was never convicted of any crime and there is no evidence that she participated in the torture of Sylvia. This is confirmed by Jenny Likens testimony in court. She was indeed a teacher, but retired now. She taught at a church school and is quite open and remorseful about her involvement in this case, she has repented before the church.
Her main failure was not reporting the crime, Sylvia died in her arms and I'm sure she is always reminded of this tragic crime. Stephanie was suffering from stress related blackouts while all of this was occurring, perhaps she too was afraid of Gertrude and Paula and what they would do to her, just as Jenny Likens was afraid to report the crime even after her sister told her she was going to die. The day Sylvia died, Jenny was out doing yard work in the neighborhood to make money. I do need to remind everyone that this crime happened 45 years ago, most of the major players are dead except Paula. Everyone received due process of law, Stephanie was never convicted of any crime. Indeed, when she reached adult age, she petitioned the Juvenile Court to have her record expunged, and this was granted. She therefore no longer has an arrest record. Paula has an adjudicated sentence, no one here is a fugitive. If you try to intimidate, harass, or make trouble for any of these people you could be subjecting yourself to criminal and/or civil penalties under the law. I think Sylvia's torture and murder was a crime against humanity and yes the major perpetrators got off lightly. So did Orenthal James Simpson, whose jury of his "peers" let him off scot free for murdering two people. The law is skewed sometimes. If you want a true account of what really happened and how it ,please read "House of Evil" by John Dean. The film "An American Crime" distorts the facts and events and even portrays Gertie and Paula in a somewhat sympathetic light. You will find by reading the book that Gertie and Paula were two very cruel women who solicit little sympathy. Since this crime there have been many more equally cruel murder cases. In one case a mother in California had her sons assist her in torturing and murdering her two oldest daughters because she was jealous of their looks. It seems that we are numb to more modern day crimes.

I just watched the movie and was completly sickened by it. How could people do this kind of thing? You need a license to get married, drive a car and even fish for God's sake but any white-trash piece of shit can have and raise an ass load of kids and abuse them like this woman did.

Just today I had a "conversation" with Coy Hubbard's grandaughter on Facebook. She's said her grandfather was a wonderful man and her hero. In addition, she doesn't think he did it and that people like me caused HIM a lot of stress in his life. I assured her that her grandpa was NOT a good man and hope that she's not like him. She was found guilty of second degree murder on May 19,1966. She won a retrial in 1971 where she pled guilty of voluntary manslaughter and served two more years. 7 years in total.

One day Sylvia will be avenged, they served no time for their crimes and tortures and the system failed her. I believe in second chances but in the end you will see a farm woman and a preacher burn in hell for torturing that poor girl. I still cry when I think about the things they have done to her. If I had the power I would make them feel the pain of their torment to Sylvia. I can only pray that her soul is at rest, and pray that in the afterlife they pay for eternity for involvement with their acts!

Our justice system is truly flawed for this very reason. There should be no tolerance in cases such as these and people who commit truly hideous crimes should be locked away permanently or exterminated. Zero tolerance. Not to mention it is a joke that the boys who particpated only recieved probation. Why bother? It's insulting to say the least.

I've done a few hours of research and found an abundance of information online. According to what i've read, Paula, served a couple of years, had several children (unbelievable), moved to Iowa (same state as her mother), it is believed that she changed her name and lives on a farm there. I am sickened to my very soul by this horrible crime. An entire family and at the very least, six unrelated children were perpetrators in this horric crime. What sickens me even more at this time, is the fact that the majority of these criminals are still alive and have been allowed to live among us and procreate, Richard Hobbs (the boy that finished the tatoo on Sylvia's stomach), only served 18 months, four years after being released died of lung cancer at the age of 21), Gertrude Nadine Baniszewski, after being released from prison, changed her name to Nadine van Fossan, moved to Iowa, and died of lung cancer in 1990. Did it never occur to anyone that every single one of these criminals should have been punished to the fullest extent of the law. In any case of release, or nonpunishment (unimaginable, but was the case with most of the perpetrators), each and every one of them should have been institutionalized in a mental hospital until (if ever) deemed no longer a danger to society! John Baniszewski served 18 months, changed his name to John Blake, moved to Texas, married, had three children,became a lay minister and counseled children (unbelievable!). Stephanie Baniszewski, served no time, changed her last name to Blake, became a shcool teacher (i'm in shock that any school district would hire her), i've read that she lives in Florida, she has a classmates.com profile (unbelievable), and she is a mother (where is childrens service's?, these people were allowed to procreate?).
