I want someone to tell me that what factors apart from the disastrous earthquake could have possibly caused this damage, as earthquakes are quite frequent in Japan.

The earthquake that struck Japan last Friday was by no means an ordinary one as it was recorded to be about 8.9 to 9.0 in magnitude, thus proving to be the fourth biggest earthquake ever since 1900's. Besides, it was accompanied by an equally disastrous tsunami (in some areas near to the coast) which is thought to be the major reason of the Nuclear plant of Japan getting damaged.
