    There is no gold 106 stamp (as there are other stamps like 925 for sterling silver or 585 for 14k gold) BUT i noticed something when i found your question today when i had the same question, i looked at the "106" under magnification and it was upside-down! It is actually 9ct, but the piece was worn down and the ct looked like numbers. 9 karat gold is from Europe. They have also used 12, 15, and 16 karat gold.
