What causes bark to be stripped on young maple trees?

we have 8 young maple trees - about 8' tall. Recently (May) we noticed the bark stripped off 3 of the trees - about a 2" wide strip and it is left hanging above the lowest branches. There are no bite marks on the tree. The leaves are now starting to change color. We have deer in the area, a few squirrels in a forested area nearby, and 3 large puppies across the street. Does anyone have any idea what caused this so we can prevent it on the other trees? Disease? animals? Is there any way to keep the trees from dying?
