Whether you have a babysitting job lined up, or are looking for work, these tips provide the basics for childcare. Meet the family. If this is a new family you are babysitting for, it’s important to take some time to meet the family and their children. Know the details. How many children will you be babysitting? What are the hours? How much will you be paid? Ask questions. If you are unclear about anything, ask the parents for more information. If it’s afternoon babysitting, are you expected to provide meals and snacks? Is there a nap time? In the evening, what should you feed him for dinner and what is his bedtime? Get contact information. If they have a cell phone, have that written down, or if they will be at a restaurant, know the name and phone number. Also have contact information in case of an emergency—neighbors, a family friend, doctor, ambulance, police department and fire department. Determine the family’s expectations. Are you only watching the children, or are you expected to do light cleaning while you’re there? Develop a game plan based on the children’s ages. Have ideas for games and activities for smaller children or bring along board games for older kids. If you are watching a baby, expect to spend a lot of time on the floor at their level.
