Helium is a tasteless, colorless, odorless, non-toxic, inert, monatomic gas that leads the noble gas group in the periodic table. Helium has the lowest boiling and melting points among other elements and it exists only as a gas except in extreme conditions. Liquid Helium is called a "quantum fluid" because it shows atomic properties on a macroscopic scale. Next to hydrogen, helium is considered as the second most abundant element in the universe by mass (25%). Its worldwide commercial production is around 4,500 tons per year.
Helium is found in natural gas deposits (up to 7% helium) and in the air (5 parts per billion) rapidly lost to space; replenished by radioactive decay (alpha particles).
It is Used in balloons, deep sea diving and in welding. Helium is also used in very low temperature research and nuclear power plant coolant as well. Its future possible uses may include as coolant for nuclear fusion power plants and in superconducting electric systems.
Helium liquid viscosity is about 25 micropoises whereas water has a viscosity of 10,000 micropoises. As helium is cooled down to its transition point, it shows an unusual property of superfluidity with a viscosity reaching zero micropoises. furthermore, liquid helium has very high thermal conductivity.
