My watch started spinning the hands out of control until it runs down. It only take a matter of seconds to run down. Any ideas why?

Assuming that this is a mechanical watch, it sounds like a broken, missing, or damaged escapement.

Hi, The mainspring contains a lot of energy, which can release suddenly during disassembly if precautions are not taken, causing serious injury. Mainsprings should be 'let down' gently before servicing, by holding the winding key and pulling the click back, allowing the spring to slowly unwind. However, even in their 'let down' state, mainsprings in barrels contain dangerous residual tension. Watchmakers and clockmakers use a tool called a 'mainspring winder' to safely install and remove them.
