Italy has two volcanoes located on and near the island of Sicily that have displayed some volcanic activity during 2009; Mt. Etna and Mt. Stromboli rank as some of the most active in the world. Further north is Mt. Vesuvius, which last erupted in 1944 and is considered to be the largest active volcano on the European mainland. It would be a major concern if this volcano were to again show signs of a possible eruption, as it is located just south of Naples. Although the prediction of a volcanic eruption is not an exact science, earth scientists have had some success in forecasting an eminent volcanic eruption. The major obstacles toward better monitoring these potential trouble spots are the expenses involved with maintaining observation posts and the large number of potential sites that can be found worldwide. Even despite these difficulties, scientists keep a close watch on possible eruptions.
