Question:

Relation of Tire weight and Mileage.

Last summer I bought a used 2004 Sienna LE AWD. It came with Bridgestone Run Flat Tires. While my mechanic had a tire off to inspect the brakes he noted that it weighed much more than a standard tire. I did some research today on the Bridgestone web site, and it seems like a normal tire weighs about 25-27 lbs, while the RFTs come in at 38 lbs. What I am trying to figure out is how much the extra 50 lbs of tire weight on the van affects my mileage, and whether it is worth it to switch to regular all-seasons before my current tires wear out.

Putting light weight tires on a car will increase mileage. But it will decrease the performance of your car.

Normally the weight specification for the Toyota Sienna 2004 is P235/60R17 for the front and for the rear also. There is a relation between Mileage and tyre weight of the car because if we use a heavy and tyre which has more width then this will definitely result in the good grip of the vehicle but it will result in slow acceleration and will also result in low mileage, although there will be a very little difference but still the shape size and weight of the tyre has an effect on the mileage of the vehicle. Similary if we choose a light tyre of less weight and the tyre of small size and width then it will result in fast movement of vehicle and less handling and also a slightly better mileage, but in your case as you have added little weight on the car like just of 50 pound then this will not effect in the performance of the car. The effect occurs when there is a big change in weight like if you add more than 200 pound weight then there might be a little burden on the tyres, otherwise tyres are flexible to handle little ups and downs in weight of the vehicle.
