Tiny insects

I have found some tiny insects around the fireplace and starting to spread. These are about the size of a pinhead and look like a ball to the naked eye. Under a magnifying glass they are dark and light striped. They don't seem to fly and don't crawl very much. Could these be the spider mites or?
