The popularity of Stairway to Heaven

A guy who's written a Led Zeppelin biography suggests that the secret to the success of Stairway to Heaven was its length. It was apparently long enough to allow radio DJs to take a break and have a cigarette. Do you really believe that? Didn't the song become popular because it's such a good song? I'd like to believe that anyway. Nevertheless, it's a d**n fun story.
