In order to mend small tears of tents, cover the damaged area with cloth repair tape, for instance ripstop nylon for nylon tents, taffeta for canvas tents. Use a liberal patch to both sides of the tear, smoothing the sides of the tape neatly to prevent snags and leaks. Coat the side of the patch with seam sealer from both sides of the tent. Apply the right sealer because canvas sealer could destroy a nylon tent. Bigger tears must be sewn closed or patched with repair tape.
If the tear is in that part of the tent where high pressure doesn't matter, turn the top edge of the tear under about 1/4 inch and stitch the folded fabric over the outside of the bottom torn edge, using a sewing awl and tight waxed thread, forming a new seam. Plan your sewing to account for water runoff; fold the edges of the patch to prepare a shingle result to shed water, not a shelf to hold it. Create your stitches small and close together; double seams are more reliable. To ensure a watertight seal, use a bead of seam sealer to the bottom sides of the overlap on the outside of the tent. But if you have tears in tightly stretched parts of the tent with strips of repair tape cut at least 1 1/2 inches longer and wider than the damage; if required, fold the strips in a shingle pattern to cover the damage fully. Cover both sides of the damaged part, and seal all sides of the tape with seam sealer, inside and out.
