The Rite of Spring is 1913 choreography with melodies by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, initial choreography by Vaslav Nijinsky, and initial set conceive and costumes by archaeologist and decorator Nicholas Roerich, all under impresario Serge Diaghilev. The music's innovative convoluted musical organizations, timbres, and use of dissonance have made it a seminal 20th 100 years composition.
Stravinsky's soonest beginning of The Rite of Spring was in the jump of 1910. Stravinsky composes, "... there originated an image of a sacred pagan ritual: the shrewd elders are seated in a around and are discerning the promenade before death of the young female who they are proposing as a forfeit to the god of spring in alignment to gain his benevolence. This became the subject of The Rite of Spring."
While creating The Firebird, Stravinsky started forming sketches and concepts for the part, recruiting the assist of Roerich. Though he was sidetracked for a year while he worked on Petrushka (which he proposed to be a lightweight burlesque as a respite from the orchestral strong work currently in progress), The Rite of Spring was created between 1912 and 1913 for Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Roerich was an integral part of the creation of the work, drawing from scenes of chronicled rites for inspiration; Stravinsky mentioned to the work-in-progress as "our child".
