Startup issues

M405 Gateway Laptop, Windows XP. Got a blue screen with sever issue and then the black screen where I told it to start windows normally. Now it appears to be hung up in the middle of the startup process as the fan runs on high, CD opens and closes but screen is blank and computer is unresponsive? I tried hard restart, reset button and removing battery and no luck so far.
