   The fourth generation of Dodge Ram was first launched at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This latest generation was advertised as the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500. It came into showrooms in fall 2008. A two-mode hybrid edition was decided for production, but has since been delayed or canceled in support of a smaller test fleet of plug-in hybrid Rams.
   Chrysler LLC tried to make the Ram competitive in the market by introducing many changes in the 2009 model that included a new four-door cab style equipped with new suspension, an option of new hemi engine, and a new storage system known as the Rambox that provides security to the storage inside the truck’s bed walls.
   The 5.7 L HEMI V8's output has been increased by 45 horsepower (34 kW) to 390 bhp (290 kW) and 407 lb•ft (552 N•m), and fuel efficiency has been a little improved by 4%. The 4.7 L (287 cu in) PowerTech V8 generates 310 bhp (230 kW) and 330 lb•ft (447 N•m), and the 3.7 L (226 cu in) PowerTech V6 gos on with 215 bhp (160 kW) and 235 lb•ft (319 N•m).
   The Mega Cab option will be removed from the 1500 series. It is replaced by a true four door crew cab. Other cab options are quad cab and regular cab. The mega cab option continues on the 2500/3500 models.
   A coil spring rear suspension is introduced for the 1500 model as it replaces the leaf-springs to get better ride class and smooth handling. These massive changes in suspension did not affect the payload capacities negatively, but still tail those of the newer Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500 and Ford F-150.
