Sony RDR-VX420 DVD Recorder / VCR Combo has no clock and unable to power up

When the plug is switched on the progressive & synchro rec lights flash along with the DVD & Video buttons. The clock does not illuminate and nothing happens when the power button is pressed or any other button is pressed.
