Smoke & Soot Damaged Cross Stitch

Trying to save a cross stitch that was damaged in a fire when our church burned down. Project was behind glass & thankfully survived with just some sooty discoloration around the edges, and of course, that horrible smoky smell. Do you recommend dry cleaning, or is there something I can try at home?
