Small holes in lawn.

Recently had a series of small holes appear on my lawn. They are approx 1.5" to 2" in diameter and approx 1" deep with some spaced roughly 12" to 16" apart in a line. I have patched them but they keep reappearing the next day. What sort of animal am I looking at? I live in Toronto, On. Canada.
