I recently planted Hydrangeas in my front garden but I wanted a small evergreen to plant among them so that my garden was not empty in the winter. The nursery suggested Dwarf Male Skimmia Japonica. For now they are small but I do not want them to grow to overpower my hydrangeas. I have a small garden and would like to keep all of the plants a manageable size. Can I prune these to shape them and keep them small? When is the best time to cut them back?

Depending on what diversity that your nursery has, these plants can augment up to 4 feet big and wide. There is one kind, 'Formanii' that only develops between 2 to 3 feet broad and tall.
If you are in a to the north weather, these plants require to be defended throughout the winter months. They like partial shadow to full shadow and dirt high in organic matter.
Pruning should be finished after they have completed flowering.
There are many beautiful skimmias, usually from the Himalayas and the Far East, and these pattern evergreen shrubs of changing heights. Most are dioecious, significance they have male and feminine blossoms on distinct plants, and both sexes should be sown to double-check a crop of fruits. 'Rubella' is a compact male kind with appealing red-margined, dark green leaves. The bloom buds, which emerge in after summer and winter, are a famous characteristic of the vegetation, as are the scented blossoms which open in spring. It is flawless for increasing in containers and presents good all year around colour. 'Rubella' has been granted an Award of Garden Merit (AGM), which is for plants of spectacular excellence.
