I have a 2002 Nissan Altima. The standard tire size is 205/65/16. Someone gave me some tires that are size 215/55/16.Would these be usable with the stock rims?

There are different sizes of tyres and they all have their individual functions. In the specification of tyre 205/55 and 16, we can see that 205 is the width of the tyre and 55 is the width across its rim. Sometimes there is a load index mentioned on the tyre which is upto 89 and the V denotes the speed rating. In some prints you can also find the recommended air pressure which is required for the U.S DOT compliance code. There are some other manufacturers code as well.
The specifications that you have mentioned is 205/65/16 for your tyre. While the other specification that you have mentioned is of 215/55/16. Now in this case we can see that the rim size of your tyre is the same which means they are both designed to be fitted on the 16 inch rim size. The difference lies in their other dimensions such as width both parallel and along with the rim. In my opinion there will not be huge difference of you change from one specification to the other one, which means that first you were using tyre of 205 mm now you will be using tyre of 215 mm , it means you are getting a tyre which will have more contact area with the floor thus resulting in good handling of the car. so it fine to use any of these tyres with your car.
