An amplifier is one of useful instrument that is used to increase the power of a signal. The term usually denotes an electronic amplifier, in which the input "signal" is always a voltage or current. In audio applications, amplifiers drive the loudspeakers applied in PA systems in order to create the human voice louder or play recorded music. Amplifiers may be categories according to the input they are made to amplify, for instance a guitar amplifier is used with an electric guitar, the device they are used to drive such as a headphone amplifier, the frequency limits of the signals (Audio, IF, RF, and VHF amplifiers,), whether they reverse the signal), or the type of device applied in the amplification (valve or tube amplifiers, FET amplifiers, etc.
A similar device that emphasizes conversion of signals of one type to another is a transducer, a transformer, or a sensor. But none of these is used to amplify the sound power. The quality of an amplifier can be mentioned by several abilities, for example: Gain, Bandwidth, Efficiency, Linearity, Noise, Output dynamic range, Slew rate, Rise time, settling time and ringing, Overshoot and Stability.
The gain of an amplifier is the ratio between output to input powers of an amplifier or amplitude, and it is normally calculated in decibels. If two equivalent amplifiers are being analyzed, the amplifier with higher gain settings would be more sensitive as it would take less input signal to create a given amount of power, while the bandwidth of an amplifier is the number of frequencies for which the amplifier produce satisfactory results.
