He has not done much wrong recently, but there’s a feeling that perhaps his performances over the past few seasons have not been as good as they have been. So, should John Terry be captain of England and does it really matter who the captain is?

John Terry is seen as representing the English spirit with his brave and indomitable performances at the heart of Chelsea’s and England’s defence. But, is this really true and is he the best man for the job of captain? His performances have not been up the world class standards that we hold him to in recent seasons, perhaps an indication that he’s not up to the label of a world class performer? Yes, he can shout and scream and be as passionate as the rest of them, but is this really what motivates the England players or is this just what some of the tabloids want to see? All things being fair and equal, it’s probably Rio Ferdinand and Ledley King who would be the two best English centre backs, right? However, we all know Ledley King is plagued by chronic knee problems which do not allow him to play more than one game a week or do any hard training. So John Terry and Rio is what we'll make do with. Further to this, does it really matter who the England captain is? In cricket captains are very important as they play a part in selecting the team as well as choosing team strategy on the pitch, in football a captain has no real role that makes him different from any other player other than the fact that he wears an armband with ‘captain’ written on it and he is involved in the coin toss at the beginning of the match. Why should the captain be someone who leads on the pitch, and drives people forward? Why doesn’t every player have this responsibility?

I can't see what John Terry has done wrong as England captain; he's scored a fair share of goals, and the England defence has only conceded four goals in seven qualifying matches. Why change now?
