Saab Convertible starts to work, but quits about halfway

I have a 2002 9-3 convertible. About a year ago the top would stop about halfway to go up or come down. No problem, I just lifted or tucked the roof manually. But then, the flap that seals the roof didn't close. (It finally did close after I waited an hour). Now I am too apprehensive to put the roof down not knowing if it will seal. My mechanic doesn't have any experience with this. Any ideas?
