WoW this is actually one of my more series answers. To make it in music especially in a genre like rock you need to have passion, but also work ethnic. Yes in the past it was mostly talent, but now with so much competition you need have the will to do any and every thing to get your message (music) out to people. Also it doesn't hurt to know your target audience. As for talent it's being able to instill your passion in others, so that they feel you. If you can get this down then its just up to time and connections (who you know)
how they achieve that is as you said they have real pain and fake pain and they want it bad and by doing bad things as much as we want to say its raw talent truthfully it has nothing to do with talent anymore a lot of it is based on looks, lyrics, and at times talent in the classic rock and grunge era (60-90's) bands were raised up by rioting young people because of raw talent and what had happened to them and being controversial but now a days its a whole different rock scene and rock is the best because it focuses on all we wish we could say but don't have the power to and it raises questions and inevitably because of the amazing people that produce it
uhm ok well first you have to learn how to play an instrument or sing. then you find a band, play some covers and start writing some songs. when you feel you're ready to play live, you go out and find gigs all over the place. eventually you'll meet a lot of people, record some demos, put them on myspace and if you're lucky you'll get a record deal.
this usually takes many years of hard work

Rock's great because it allows people to speak their mind. The main reason anyone can become famous popular is because they start out playing local gigs and run-down bars and work their way up. Rock and Roll is about being independent and open minded, not sucking up to the man and doing what the man wants them to do. Think about it, do you know how Led-Zeppelin got their name? Everyone said that they were gonna sink like a lead zeppelin.
