Removing paint and excess grout from slate flooring

   Hi There, The slate should have been pre-sealed before installation, with a clear penetrating sealer, this will not alter the color or look of the slate and is used to protect the slates surface from grouting work and in this case paint also. And most if not all of the grout residual could have been removed with a mild acid wash before the top coat sealer was applied and then the paint removed with a mild solvent. Now things are more complicated because of improper prep work. First of all you can't remove a topical sealer properly with an acid wash so that's out. You will need to find a stripper or solvent to do that, and while you may find one that will work for removing the sealer you then have to make sure that the solvent doesn't damage the stone or the grout, by fading or discoloring it, remember some slates contain oil resins that are adversely affected by solvents, also, call the sealer manufacturer and ask then to recommend a solvent to remove their sealer product, also call the solvent manufacturer to see if their product is safe for use on stone and slate floors. And also call a reputable stone restoration contractor to look at this situation and possibly do the work and talk to your contractors about paying the bill. But if they insist that they can do it, ask them to do a test area first to see their procedure and it's effectiveness. Thanks
