Radio stations managers are usually refer as program directors. As the title shows their responsibilities include overseeing various functions of a radio station that involve its programming. Usually the duties of a station manager or program director are almost same. As radio station ownership gone through strong consolidation during 1990s and early 2000s, jobs consolidated as well. For instance, at commercial radio stations, station managers and program directors were separate jobs in few situations. As consolidation took control, this became little more than an anomaly with both hats being used by the single person. A station manager analyzes the station's programming.
At a music station, he will work with the music director to finalize the songs that a station will play. On both music and talk stations, the manager works with on-air person to be certain that their work contribute to the desired sound and tone of the station. The Station managers also collaborate with radio station's promotions department, in order to create and execute station events and remote broadcasts. Although station managers do not directly work with the sales department but they work closely with sales in an effort to generate maximize the station's profits. A station manager is also the responsible person that will deal with the community or other media outlets when the station becomes the news. He also oversees the stations daily operations and the station manager will work closely with outside groups in order to fulfill a station's commitment to community service and the public interest.
