Pruning a rose of sharon bush

My rose of sharon bushes are over 8" tall and are tipping over from the weight. We always cut them back (almost to the ground) in late summer/early fall. Most pictures of R.O.S bushes I see are not so tall and I was wondering if that was because of our pruning practice.
