Problems programming keyless remote

I was told our 200 Chevy Blazer was "equipped" to have a keyless remote. We went out and bought one for each of us and now we are unable to "program" them. We have gone through the directions several times but the locks do not "lock and unlock automatically" after the process explained. Does this mean we have spent $$ on something that will not be of any use to this vehicle?
