I heard an announcer refer to Gregory Peck as a former truck driver. Did he ever work as a truck driver? Can you tell me about his lifestyle and career. What happened to him while he was in the San Diego College.

He sure did. Around 1935, he was drifting a little bit, and dropped out of San Diego State College to take a job with the Union Oil Company. After a stint as janitor, he was promoted to the position of driving the truck (a full sized truck with separate cab and trailer) which transported gasoline in the San Diego area. He earned $125 per month.

And, you know, it occurs to me that there is a second possibility for your heaving heard him referred to as a \"former truck driver.\" In 1940, he won an scholarship to apprentice at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia. The acclaimed theater earned it's name for it's practice of accepting livestock or produce in exchange for theater tickets and, rather than paying it's actors, giving them room and board and valuable experience. However, the actors also had to take on every other job of putting on a production, including transporting the lighting and scenery. In the lobby of this theater today is the bumper from one of it's circa-1940 trucks bearing the inscription, \"Gregory Peck Drove This Truck.\"

I'm not sure which of the above is responsible for the reference, but I'm sure it must be one or the other.
