I have a small 2 ounce almost heart shaped bottle of Paul Masson Rare Tawny Port and the date on the label says 1852. I had a sister who was killed in an accident in 1977 and it was something I got of hers. She was 20 yrs old at the time and I came across it recently and it has me curious. I know it is at least 31 years old, as the anniversary of her death is St. Patrick Day. Her death was not alcohol related as she had a hiking accident. I am thinking of opening it and drinking it in her honor next week. Thanks for any information as I know little about any wines.

Paul Masson manufactured dessert wines, for many decades. The heart shaped bottle was because Masson was born on Valentine Day. As far as the wine inside is concerned nothing can be said about it that whether it is drinkable or not. Tawny port is made by fermenting grapes just like normal table wines. After a certain alcohol level and the sweetness desired level is achieved, brandy is added to the must to stop further fermentation. Then, the resulting wine is put into barrel. For a tawny style, the wine is allowed exposure to oxygen. The wine will begin to change, gaining flavors of oxidation. With such a small amount of wine in your bottle and the unknown quality of the wine prior to bottling, it is likely that the wine, if you opened it, would smell of just alcohol and sherry-like, rancid aromas. Somehow, it may not be a worthy tribute to your deceased sibling.
